SKILLS TUITION

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING SKILLS - WEEKEND BREAKS

Our objective for these weekends is for you to go home with new riding skills to practice and new-found confidence on the trail. You’ll also go home having had plenty of fun and having met some like-minded fellow mountain bikers into the bargain.

The weekend begins with an informal get together on Friday night in a local pub. This gives the group a chance to get to know each other and an opportunity to meet the instructor for the weekend who will take you through the planned itinerary, answer any remaining questions you might have and discuss any specific objectives.

There follows two full days of mountain bike skills tuition and trail riding with an SMBLA qualified instructor. We’ll begin each day with some skills tuition in a ‘safe’ environment, enabling you to concentrate on practicing the elements of each skill without the worry of natural hazards trying to scupper your efforts! Later on you’ll get the chance to practice those skills on the local trails, the route taken being appropriate to the ability of the group. At the end of each day there will be a chance to discuss your progress with the instructor and get feedback.

We’ll saddle up around 9.30am, use a local café or pub for lunch and finish up around 4.00pm, giving you plenty of time to relax post ride on Saturday and travel home Sunday.

We offer two levels of skills instruction:-

MTB Riding Skills - Basics

Aimed at

Those new or nearly new to mountain biking  - You may have been riding your bike off-road for a while but have not yet gained the confidence to move off the 'track' and onto the 'trail'. Alternatively you might have been riding less technical trails for a while but are fed up with getting off when you really want to be able to enjoy a more flowing ride.

OR bikers who having been riding for some time but who have never really thought about how they ride their bike. If, like many, you took up mountain biking and have found your own way, but still find yourself struggling at times, this course will take you back to basics, get rid of any lazy habits and really make you think about your riding style.

Objective To introduce basic mountain biking skills to enable you to ride safely off-road and to enable you to deal with common trail conditions such as moderate gradients, rocks, roots, small steps and drops. To become confident in riding trails which need a low to medium level of technical ability.
Content The course will cover bike setup, safety checks, basic body positioning, gear selection, line choice, effective braking, techniques for dealing with moderate climbs and descents, small obstacles such as roots and rocks, small steps and roll-offs and basic cornering techniques.

MTB Riding Skills - Intermediate

Aimed at Those already confident riding trails and who have experience of riding on more technically demanding terrain. You will be used to encountering rocks, roots, reasonably steep gradients and other natural obstacles which you will sometimes ride, but not necessarily with any degree of style!
Objective To develop mountain biking skills which will enable you to tackle bigger obstacles safely and with more confidence, keeping you on your bike for longer thereby creating a faster, more flowing ride. To progress to a more advanced level of riding.
Content The course will cover bike setup, safety checks, front and rear wheel lifts, drops and hops, cornering at higher speeds, techniques for climbing and descending more severe gradients and riding rock gardens.
